Tumbatu Island Tour Experience

Tumbatu Island, located off the north-west coast of Zanzibar in East Africa, offers a unique and culturally immersive experience for visitors. The island is home to the Watumbatu people, who are known for their selective approach to allowing outsiders onto the island. Visitors typically need permission from the elders of the community to explore Tumbatu.

Watumbatu Community and Lifestyle

The Watumbatu people live in a self-supporting community on Tumbatu Island. They engage in activities such as fishing, preparing fishing nets and fish traps, and building boats. Education is also important to them, with a school present on the island. The community’s life revolves around Ras Mskitini, a prominent figure on the island, and is surrounded by Baobab trees that hold unspoken secrets and are sometimes associated with witchcraft. The income of the Watumbatu people primarily comes from fishing and tourism.

Tumbatu Island Day Trip Guidelines

For those interested in visiting Tumbatu Island, it is essential to respect the guidelines set by the Watumbatu community. These guidelines include obtaining permission from elders before visiting, following rules during the excursion, and respecting local customs. Visitors are advised on appropriate attire (e.g., no beachwear, shoulders covered for men, wide long trousers for men), photography restrictions (permission required), and other practical considerations like sun protection and appropriate footwear.
