The Mwaka Kogwa Festival is a traditional Shirazi or Persian New Year celebration held in Zanzibar, particularly in the village of Makunduchi on southern Unguja. The festival includes a unique tradition of play-fighting among men using banana sticks, symbolic burning of a ritual hut to predict prosperity for the village, singing, dancing, feasting, drumming, and enjoying Swahili cuisine accompanied by taarab music. It serves as a purification ceremony and an opportunity for participants to address past grievances in a controlled and enjoyable manner, fostering emotional renewal as they enter the new year.
